Introduction to Music Together
Music Together is a renowned early childhood music and movement program that has been enriching the lives of families since 1987. Designed for children from birth through age eight, the program emphasizes the importance of family involvement in a child's musical development. By creating a participatory and inclusive environment, Music Together encourages children and their caregivers to explore the joys of making music together.
Central to Music Together's philosophy is the belief that all children are inherently musical and can achieve basic music competence when provided with a supportive environment. The program operates on the understanding that music learning mirrors language acquisition; just as children learn to speak by being immersed in a language-rich environment, they learn to make music by being immersed in a musically rich setting. This approach fosters not only musical skills but also enhances overall development, including social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth.
Music Together classes are designed to be informal and engaging, allowing children to participate at their own comfort level. Each class typically lasts 45 minutes and includes a variety of activities such as singing, movement, and instrument play. The non-performance-oriented setting respects individual learning styles and developmental stages, creating a relaxed atmosphere where families can bond through shared musical experiences.
The program features a rich curriculum with nine song collections, each presented over a three-year cycle. These collections include a diverse mix of original songs and traditional tunes from various cultures, exposing children to a wide range of musical styles, tonalities, and rhythms. Families receive materials such as CDs and illustrated songbooks to continue the musical experience at home, reinforcing the learning and enjoyment that takes place during class.
Music Together places a strong emphasis on the quality of its instruction. Teachers undergo comprehensive training to become registered Music Together educators. This training equips them with the skills to create a nurturing and musically rich environment, facilitate classes effectively, and support the musical development of both children and their caregivers.
The program's curriculum is grounded in extensive research in early childhood music development. Studies have shown that active music participation supports various aspects of development, including language acquisition, coordination, and social skills. By engaging in Music Together classes, children not only develop musically but also gain benefits that extend to other areas of their growth and learning.
Since its inception, Music Together has grown to serve communities worldwide, with classes offered in thousands of locations across more than 40 countries. This global presence reflects the universal appeal and effectiveness of the program in bringing families together through music. By participating in Music Together, families join a larger community that values the role of music in early childhood and family life.
