Arguably, the worst ship sinking in terms of loss of life in history occurred in the Baltic Sea. The Soviet captain Alexander Marinesko, the man Hitler called his personal enemy, sent almost 9,000 people, mostly civilians, down to the bottom of the sea when he torpedoed this German ship.
