On October 12th 1492, after sailing across the Atlantic Ocean, Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus landed on a Bahamian island, thinking he had reached the Spice Islands of East Asia. He claimed the land for Isabella and Ferdinand of Spain, regardless of the indigenous population living there.
